1. Male Infertility-More Common Than You Think

When it comes to fertility issues, more often than not, we think of women. However, little do most people know, somewhere around one third of all fertility issues are attributed to male factor infertility.

Another one third of all cases are attributed to a combination of male and female fertility issues. There are many different types of male fertility issues, with many different causes. Read on to learn more about some of the most common causes of male infertility.

2. Medical Causes

When it comes to male infertility, there are probably more medical causes than any other causes. One of the most common medical issues that cause male infertility is a varicocele.

Varicoceles are swelling of the veins that drain the testicles, and they are also the most common reversible cause of male infertility. Varicoceles make it harder for the testicles to cool, which can lead to low sperm counts and poor sperm health. Another common medical cause of male infertility are infections.

There are many different types of infection that can affect male fertility, from infections caused by sexually transmitted diseases, to inflammation of the prostate. There are other medical causes of male infertility as well, like tumors, hormone imbalances, medications, prior surgeries, or even celiac disease.

3. Lifestyle Causes

Another very common cause of male infertility are certain lifestyle choices. For example, being overweight and not getting enough exercise can wreak havoc on a man’s fertility. Same with drug and alcohol use.

Smoking is especially damaging to sperm counts and even secondhand smoke can damage sperm. Men who are under prolonged extreme emotional stress also usually have more fertility issues than other men.

Prolonged bicycling is another cause of fertility issues. This is because of overheating of the testicles. Spending a lot of time in a hot tub, sauna or steam room can also reduce fertility due to overheating testicle issues as well.

4. Environmental Causes

Another factor that can affect male fertility, although less common than the others, is environmental causes. When men are overexposed to certain chemicals or environmental factors, it can seriously damage their fertility.
