So, what can you expect when you’re expecting? You’ve seen the movie, you’ve read the books, but REALLY, what can you expect when you’re pregnant? Well one thing is for sure: you can expect a roller coaster ride filled with emotions and symptoms that you have never felt before.
One of the most obvious and well known changes during pregnancy is weight gain. It’s pretty obvious that if you are growing a human, you are going to gain weight, but most women don’t realize how much weight.
For an average woman, 25 to 35 pounds is the normal amount of weight to gain. In the first trimester of pregnancy, most women gain between 2-4 pounds. For each week after the first trimester, most women gain about one pound per week.
One of the biggest things about getting pregnant is that your body will begin to have an influx of hormones. These hormones will cause you to experience all sorts of feelings and emotions that you have never felt before.
Be prepared to be angry, weepy, happy, teary, aggravated, scared, nervous, stressed and more, all rolled into one. Hormonal changes are perfectly normal, and so are all of the emotions that go with them. However, if you feel extremely down or depressed, make sure to talk about that with your doctor.
No woman wants to have any complications with her pregnancy, but there are a few to be aware of. Preeclampsia, or gestational hypertension is a very common one and can cause swelling. It can also lead to you having to go into labor early.
Gestational diabetes is also a very common pregnancy complication, luckily it usually goes away after you give birth. Your doctor will do lots of tests to find out if there are any other complications that you might be at risk for.
Something that you should be prepared for if you are pregnant is that fact that pregnancy comes with lots of different aches and pains, and you should be prepared to feel uncomfortable. Headaches are very common with pregnancy, along with dizziness and fatigue, as well as breast tenderness and pain.
Swelling of the legs and feet is also very common. Many women also have back pain, achy feet and more. If you have a pregnancy issue and you are wondering if it is normal, go ahead and ask your doctor. Most likely, what you are experiencing is perfectly normal.
