As women are progressing through their pregnancy, it isn’t always just their stomachs that are growing rapidly. In fact, other portions of the body are likely to be growing as well. When the feet and ankles swell throughout pregnancy, this is referred to as edema and is something that nearly 75% of pregnant women experience.

The reason that edema is common is because pregnancy causes the body to take in more fluids. This is necessary because the additional fluid will help nurture both the mother and the growing baby inside of her. Along with the feet, the hands are another common area that can swell during pregnancy as well.

For example, if you find that your swelling remains for longer than a day at a time or if it doesn’t improve overnight, you should talk to your doctor. This could be a symptom of preeclampsia.

In order to avoid swelling, try to avoid sitting or standing in one place for very long. Elevating your feet is also another thing that you can do to cut down on the swelling. Women have also found relief from swelling by wearing support hose and comfy shoes as well.
